A TOTAL restructuring of Lufthansa Cargo's product was announced at an international press launch in Frankfurt last week with the words 'time-definite' the new definition for the service.
It's the first truly perceptible step in a three-year programme to modernise Lufthansa Cargo, Wilhelm Althen, chairman of the executive board of the cargo company told FTW senior journalist, Alan Peat, at a special, pre-launch meeting in the airline's German home city.
Starting on April 1 in the major international markets the new three-tier airfreight service replaces the old order of 'standard' and 'Flash express' - and with 'capacity and service guarantees' headlines of the launch.
Denoting that all the new services are time-definite, the brand name begins with the abbreviated 'td' prefix - the base-line 'td.Pro'; the faster transit 'td.X'; and the extra-fast 'td.Flash' services.
The timing of td.Pro offers a pick-up at destination with a cargo availability of three to four days (varying with flight availability on the route); td.X a two-to-three day cargo availability; and td.Flash the fastest cargo availability.
The two top-speed products include capacity and performance guarantees - with Lufthansa picking up the full tab if it fails to meet its time-definite promise.
The td.Pro service - 'A much improved product,' said Althen - is to be priced the same as the current standard airfreight - td.X at +30% and the td.Flash at +45%.
This is to be run out on Lufthansa's global partnership network by year-end with Lufthansa Cargo in SA currently readying itself for the local launch.
"These three options offer customers the optimum transit time assessed for individual shipments," Stefan Lauer, executive board member for marketing and sales told FTW at the pre-conference meet. "Our new services - totally time-definite focused - will generate abundant added-value for customers and business partners."
