US technology giant Google will acquire a stake in Kenya and Africa’s largest wind farm upon its completion in 2017.
Bloomberg news reports that the technology company will buy a 12.5% share of the project from Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems A/S.
The Lake Turkana wind project will have a capacity of 310 megawatts and will cost about $700 million, said Bloomberg.
The Lake Turkana wind farm will power about 2 million homes in Kenya once it is connected to the grid. It will contribute to about 15% of Kenya’s current grid capacity. The Kenyan government reportedly intends to add five gigawatts of power by 2020.
