Global operators eye investment in Mauritian port expansion

There are several global terminal operators interested in the Mauritius Port Authority’s (MPA) long-term plans for a new breakwater and container terminal at Port Louis – including DP World, said Nomita Seebaluck, manager: port operations.

She told delegates at the Africa Ports & Harbours Show in Johannesburg yesterday that the port authority had reclaimed 60 hectares of land (which extended into the sea) to develop the new terminal which is set for completion by 2025.

“We are already operating the port at more than its 550 000 TEU capacity and trade to the Indian Ocean Islands is growing,” said Seebaluck, adding that the new port master plan would be released early next year.

Short-term plans to create additional capacity include the extension of the current quay by 440 metres to create a total quay length of one kilometre. The US$190-million project is set for completion by 2016, with construction having started last year.
