Construction has officially started on the development of the multi-purpose Atlantic Terminal Services on-dock facility at the Takoradi port in the western region of Ghana.

The first phase will involve the construction of a 600-metre quay wall with pavement alongside it.  The project will also see the port basin being dredged to create a 16-metre depth.

The US$475-million project is a joint venture between local company Ibistek and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GHPA) under a concession agreement signed between the two in 2017.

The port, established in 1928, is strategically located 225km west of Accra. According to a GHPA spokesperson, it is well connected to its hinterland which makes it the preferred gateway to the middle and northern parts of Ghana and the landlocked countries of Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali.
