Gauteng thoroughfares closed after trucks are set alight

Information is still coming in about the situation on the R59 after both the Federation of East and Southern African Road Transport Associations (Fesarta) and the Road Freight Association (RFA) received information of truck burning and traffic disruption.

Early this morning it was reported that five trucks had been set alight last night, two on the Old Vereeniging Road and three on Heidelberg Road.

According to Fesarta chief executive Mike Fitzmaurice, six vehicles were targeted in the attacks by assailants armed with AK47 assault rifles.

Three of the trucks that had been set alight were tankers, he said.

“It’s not clear who the attackers are affiliated to. It does not appear at this stage to be protest-related but we await further information.”

The information Fesarta received also mentioned that Heidelberg Road was still closed at the time this post was drafted, and that transporters and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Information from another informant pointed out that that R59 between Alberton and the Old Block House on the way to Sasolburg was closed.

The message said this was due to truck burning and accidents.

It should also be noted that adverse weather conditions could be responsible for traffic disruption on heavily congested roads.

It also believed that the N3 northbound towards Grey Avenue in the Germiston area was heavily congested this morning.

Freight News contacted RFA CEO Gavin Kelly who said he would provide more information if and when it became available.
