ALAN PEAT GAUTENG IS the hub of economic activity in SA, contributing about half of the nation’s wealth, according to Arnold Garber, MD of Johannesburg-based Compu-Clearing (CC). “While our clients in the airfreight transport business have numbers of branches around the country, the Gauteng element way outperforms all the others put together,” he told FTW. The Johannesburg International Airport (JIA) has grown out of all proportion, Garber added, and even though some international airlines fly to Cape Town, Johannesburg remains number one. “Gauteng is where it happens,” he said. And, because that’s where most of the freight companies have their headquarters, that’s where Compu-Clearing also bases itself. “And indeed,” Garber said, “with communications having improved so tremendously and transport costs having been reduced in recent years, we can justify being able to monitor our coastal business from our Johannesburg centre.”
