PORTNET'S PORT Authority Division chief executive officer Siyabonga Gama has been appointed president of the Port Management Authority of Eastern and Southern Africa (PMAESA). South Africa is one of the newest members of the 26-year-old association.
PMAESA covers ports and harbours from Namibia to Sudan and helps them collaborate on their activities and processes. Its aim is to exchange information and ideas on the ports
industry, to improve conditions of utilisation and
management of ports in the region and to establish and maintain relations with other port authorities or associations regionally or internationally.
Members include port and harbour authorities
in the region, terminal authorities in ports, as well as organisations ancillary to the port industry, such as customs and shipping companies and railways.
According to Riah Phiyega, Strategy Co-ordination Manager for the Port Authority Division, Gama's role will be to direct the association in its objectives, to preside over all council and board meetings and functions of the association and to oversee the management of the association.
He will be working closely with the secretary general of the association, Oliver Hartman, who is based at the PMAESA headquarters in Mombasa.
