THE SOUTHERN Africa rail network is being affected by Zimbabwe's chronic fuel shortage because the country's rail system is breaking down, says the Southern Africa Railways Association.
Association executive director Renny Makumbe says operations in neighbouring countries are being disrupted because through-shipments in Zimbabwe are being held up.
National Railways of Zimbabwe g.m. Sam Zumbika says solutions are being found to ease the problems. Zambia Railways is now operating to Hwange,100
km inside the country, while NRZ locomotives are refuelling at
border points inside Botswana and Mozambique.
Road transporters from South Africa report a boom in business to the north, as shippers do not want to use Zimbabwe.
