Full name: Brenda Horne Current position: CEO of the Maputo Corridor Logistics Initiative (MCLI). Born: 16 February 1955 in Bloemfontein Educated: Management Development Programme at Tukkies Business School; major training and education since 1981 in Manganese Metal Company (MMC). First job: SARS in Bellville. How did you get involved in the freight industry?: MMC exports 98% of its product, so freight and shipping have always been a core part of my business focus. Most notable changes in the industry in your time: Containerisation, information technology and the application of real time processing with track and trace. Most influential person in shaping your career: My father – his mentorship from the time I was a little girl was that whatever you do, do it to the best of your ability, because somewhere along the line it will make a difference. Best personal achievement: Not achievement – rather grace received – to have mothered my two children as a single, working parent and then to accept the day when God called Bernice home at the early age of 21, knowing that God does not make mistakes! Best professional achievement: The day we secured sufficient finances from our foundation members to support the establishment of MCLI. Greatest challenge that SA faces: To maintain the momentum of peace and democracy in an environment of integrity with the continued goal of a better life for all. Business icon you most admire: First of all the Lord Jesus Christ, because He has set the perfect example of integrity and service, then obviously our unselfish Nelson Mandela and Mathews Phosa our MCLI chairman who unselfishly mentors, guides and supports without any financial support from MCLI. Most meaningful quote: Everything is possible as long as the will is there to succeed! Favourite reading: My Bible after all the reams and reams of literature on corridor development and regional integration Favourite airline: MCLI is an NGO – the best air fare for a flight in economy class! Favourite holiday destination: My home in Marloth Park, on the Maputo Corridor. Your views on Transnet Rail Freight: Very happy that they are partners on the Maputo Corridor and see it as the “Rising Giant”. Your views on SA Revenue Service Customs: Customs has a major role to play on all our corridors to ensure readiness for the free trade movement by 2008 and a customs Union for SADC by 2010. Outside interests: Travel and the African outdoors.
