Freight grows as passengers slump

PRELIMINARY FIGURES from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for May showed a 21% drop in international passenger traffic over May 2002. The SARS-hit Asia Pacific carriers experienced a 50.8% drop, the worst performance among all of the regions. Freight traffic, however, continued to grow. In May, overall freight traffic - expressed in freight tonne kilometres (FTKs) - grew by 3% over May 2002. Cumulatively, the first five months of 2003 recorded an 8.7% increase over 2002.
