Foreign airline still in business rescue talks with Air Zimbabwe despite debt

Zimbabwe president, Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Although Ethiopian Airlines has not been able to repatriate funds owed to it by the Zimbabwean government, President Emmerson Mnangagwa is confident that talks of business rescue by the Ethiopian carrier will continue.

The Zimbabwean government is reportedly in debt to Ethiopian Airlines to the tune of US$18 million due to a shortage of foreign currency.

But Mnangagwa, speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 32nd African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, said this “wasn’t an issue”.

“They [Ethiopian] believe that if they establish a partnership with Air Zimbabwe, they will be able to get that money without any problems and in a very short space of time," he said.

According to a New Zimbabwe newspaper report other foreign airlines operating in Zimbabwe have also struggled to repatriate the money owed them.
