The number of cellular
containerships scrapped so
far this year is significantly
lower than in 2009.
November 1 figures
released by the French
shipping industry
researchers, Alphaliner,
recorded that a total of 105
ships of average age of 27
years, and the equivalent
of 160 755-TEU capacity,
were committed for
deletion (scrapped/lost/
consigned to non-container
or military use) for the year
to that date.
This deletion activity
(and the full-year figure
is expected to be only
minimally higher, if at all)
is much less than half that
of 2009, when 207 ships
(average age 27 years)
totalling 38169-TEUs, were
deleted.
