Faster railway line linking Mombasa port to Nairobi set for early launch

The planned new, faster railway line linking Kenya’s port of Mombasa to Nairobi has been fast-tracked and is now set to open a year earlier, in June 2017, according to news reports.

CNBC Africa’s daily online news service cited the chairman of Kenya Railways as saying that the first tracks would be laid by the end of 2016.

A transaction adviser will reportedly be appointed by the end of September to help select a private management firm for the line.

According to a statement by Kenya Railways, the project is the first stage in a scheme that aims to extend to Uganda and other landlocked countries.
