Far East lines hint at imminent GRI

THE RUMOUR in the industry about an imminent general rates increase (GRI) on the Far
East trade would seem to have
substance, according to the feed-back from an FTW
spying mission.
The loud whisper suggested that most shipping lines serving this route were looking at a GRI. The increases being talked about were said to be in the region of US$200 for a 20-foot (6-metre) container, and US$400 for a 40-ft (12-m).
Sources in Safari - the multi-line, vessel sharing service on the trade - told FTW that the matter was certainly being discussed. And, while there was no confirmation of the amount of the
intended increase, the planned imposition date is believed to be
April 15.
No official comment was available from the other lines approached.
