‘Fake’ foot and mouth disease message does the rounds

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development has discounted as “fake news” a message distributed via social media claiming that the Vhembe district of Limpopo has been cleared of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

“Investigations have identified locations that remain under precautionary quarantine until diagnostic testing is completed and the status of these farms has been confirmed as negative for FMD,” according to a statement from the department.

“This phase has not been completed yet.”

Daff says a review of the situation will only be considered once all involved properties have been tested and the investigation of the outbreak completed to prevent any further FMB virus circulation.
