Enough of talking! says Jakavula

'This is Spoornet's year of implementation'

SPOORNET IS repositioning itself to ensure a viable logistics business that is sustainable over the long term, Jakavula said.
Currently the Commercial Freight Division of Spoornet, which services about 1 500 customers, is not profitable. Given the fact that we compete in a deregulated transport market and bearing in mind the dynamic needs of the market, the repositioning of the freight division seeks to redefine the way we do business, he said.
Spoornet will be focusing on specific areas: growing outbound traffic; establishing a presence in South African harbours to improve throughput times of import and export business; maintaining its position in heavy haul and bulk products; cementing relationships with its customers; and providing industry solutions for inbound and outbound commodities, he said.
It would also aggressively leverage e-business to enhance value to customers and improve capacity availability and utilisation levels, continuing to cut costs through improved efficiency.
This is the year of implementation for Spoornet - enough of talking, he said.
Last year we embarked on a programme of transforming operations. The turnaround challenge is a R1.7 billion turnaround by March 2004 against the March 2000 baseline to achieve self-sustainable capital funding.
