EL call attracts PE cargo

Ed Richardson

THERE IS already a move of cargo away from Port Elizabeth to the newly-introduced Southern Africa-Europe Container Service (Saecs) between East London and Europe.
The service, which offers the fastest transit times between East London and Europe, has attracted between 40 and 50 containers a week away from Port Elizabeth, according to Safmarine Eastern Cape area manager Dave Kirkman.
Up to now exports from the East London area have had to be routed through Durban or Port Elizabeth.
Kirkman says the new cargo through the port is a mixed bag of agricultural products and automotive components.
The service, which originates in Bremerhaven, was introduced in order to service a Mercedes Benz C-Class manufacturing and export programme based in East London.
