115 fully-owned vehicles Anna Cox WHO SAYS size doesn’t count? International Delivery Company (IDC) is big, bigger than most, with 115 fully owned vehicles. In addition its fully equipped 40 000sq/m depot has container capacity for 1500 TEUS. “Our size certainly does make a difference in the market place,” said general manager Kevin Ross In preparation for the usual increase in road transportation demand that always precedes the Christmas season, IDC is ensuring that it can cater for every customer requirement. As part of its value-added services, the company provides storage of containers as well as an inland transhipment depot that offers cross-border clients the option of repositioning containers according to client requirements. The Johannesburg depot is strategically located near Johannesburg International Airport on the R21 at Pomona, an ideal location for cross-border shipments in Ross’s view. It is equipped to handle small goods, break bulk and containers of all sizes. Empty storage “We are also able to store empty containers on our premises for re-use, or forward them to any destination according to the shipping agent’s requirements. Most transporters have to return their containers to City Deep for re-use. “This avoids long queues at City Deep and offers time and cost benefits,” says Ross. One of IDC’s major focus points in the service provider chain is effective communication at all times, said Ross. “Unfortunately being a link in the transportation supply chain puts us at the mercy of delays that are beyond our control, and for this reason we place strong emphasis on communication within our organisation and with our clients. “Effective communication places unforeseen problems on the table where they can be dealt with as swiftly and efficiently as possible in a manner that suits the client. It is only through this communication process that the many potential pitfalls of transportation can be addressed and overcome,” said Ross.
