The Free Market Foundation (FMF) will hold an e-briefing to coincide with the worldwide launch of the latest iteration of the Economic Freedom of the World: 2021 Annual Report.
The e-brief will delve into where South Africa ranks at the moment - and it matters, the FMF says in a statement.
“In 2000 South Africa ranked 58 in the Economic Freedom of the World annual report; by 2018 it had plummeted to 90 out of 162 countries; where does it rank in 2021? Is there good news? Join us to find out.”
Following the report’s announcement, a selection of panellists will discuss the following topics prior to a Q&A session:
-
Neil Emerick – overview of EFW index (how it works, what it measures, SA’s 2021 score)
Emerick is a director and co-founder of local company NightsBridge and an associate of the FMF. - Phumlani Majozi – size of government. Majozi is a business and macroeconomics analyst, writer and commentator on economic and political issues.
- Rex van Schalkwyk – legal system and property rights. Van Schalkwyk is a former judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa and is the chairman of the FMF’s Rule of Law Board of Advisers.
- Chris Hattingh – freedom to trade. Hattingh is deputy director at the Free Market Foundation. He is the FMF representative with the Global Trade and Innovation Policy Alliance, a member of the advisory council of the Initiative for African Trade and Prosperity, as well as a Senior Fellow at African Liberty.
- John Dludlu – red tape and de/regulation. Dludlu is a former Sowetan editor, and is currently CEO of the Small Business Institute.
The topics up for discussion are in keeping with the five areas monitored to determine and elaborate on the economic freedom of countries in a report that is co-published by Canada’s Fraser Institute and the FMF, and which is widely regarded as a premier measurement tool of its kind.
Tomorrow’s e-briefing will take place from 10-11:30 and will be live-streamed to the FMF’s YouTube channel.
