Eastern Cape records highest salary rises

Ed Richardson THE EASTERN Cape recorded the highest rise in salaries and wages to individuals for the third quarter of 2005. According to the September 2005 survey of remuneration of employees and turnover of institutions by Statistics South Africa, there was a 35.5% rise in remuneration of employees based on regional services levies received by Eastern Cape institutions during the period. Next highest increase was 23.8% registered by the Western Cape (R18-billion in total). According to StatsSA, the largest provincial contributor to the total remuneration of employees was Gauteng (47.7%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (14.1%) Western Cape (12.2%), Eastern Cape (8.0%), North West (5.8%), Mpumalanga (5.2%), Free State (3.1%), Limpopo (2.4%) and Northern Cape (1,6%). The salary and wage bill for Gauteng was R70.6-billion.
