FTW2445 FREIGHT & TRADING WEEKLY 0017SP 505-4800 Country of Origin – Labelling Requirement The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) issued an Information Document on 08 May 2008 relating to the application of an earlier Government Gazette notice on “Country of Origin Labelling”. The notice published in the Government Gazette of 14 December 2 006 came into effect on 14 April 2 007. The first 12 months were however used for an education drive to inform and educate businesses about the importance of complying with the notice. Effective since 15 April 2008, the dti and the South African Revenue Service (Sars) has been randomly detaining consignments to conduct inspections. Goods that do not comply with the country of origin labelling will be seized and prosecution will ensue. National Ports Act – Comment Invited The Ports Regulator has invited interested parties to comment on the National Ports Act. Comment is due by no later than 16 May 2 008. National Treasury – Research on SA Growth On 08 May 2 008, the Department of National Treasury released its “Research of Papers on Growth in South Africa by the International Panel”. The document contains 21 recommendations, including recommendations on “Trade and Competition Policy”, and “Industrial Policy (including Beneficiation Policy)”.
