Durban port plans blanket video security

PROVIDING VIDEO camera coverage of the entire Durban harbour is one of the major security projects planned by National Ports Authority. Outlining the port’s security plans at last week’s African Ports and Harbours Congress at Gallagher Estate, Midrand, harbour master Mike Brophy said this would complement the existing installation covering Maydon Wharf. It would also help to achieve NPA’s overall goals of reducing cargo and vehicle theft, illegal and undocumented immigrants, drugs and firearms smuggling and trade fraud. “The effects of heightened security at the port are already apparent in the remarkable reduction in the number of incidents of stowaways leaving from the port,” he said. On the customs side he said there were plans to introduce another scanner in line with the CSI as introduced by US Customs.
