Global transport and logistics major DSV has extended its African reach with the setting up of offices in Johannesburg. The company, which has had operations in South Africa for several years via agents, believes that South Africa offers significant business opportunity, says Peter Meldrum Larsen, DSV Air & Sea Holding vice president. “It was a natural development as we have been operational through our agents in South Africa. It was only a matter of time before we created our own entity in the country, which is not just important in its own right, but is also the gateway into Africa.” With offices in Parktown in Johannesburg, the company officially began trading in South Africa on December 1, but already plans are under way to grow its footprint. “We also have an office at OR Tambo International Airport and an office in Cape Town,” says Larsen. “By 2011 we expect to have opened further offices in Durban and Port Elizabeth as well.” According to Larsen the company bought the activities of Transmedit Forwarding, which was one of its agents in South Africa. “We have had a long standing relationship with Transmedit and have had similar clients. Through this acquisition we now have a presence in the country as we employ some 30 people in Johannesburg and Cape Town.”
