Delmas Midas keeps its promise

Terry Hutson

A YEAR ago Delmas Midas Line made a promise of bigger ships on the South Africa service. Since its launch in November 1998 with five
multipurpose ships each of
about 500 TEU capacity plus breakbulk, Midas Line is now arguably the major player in the South Africa - West Africa trade.
Close to its first anniversary Midas introduced its first larger ship, Ostfriesland, with a capacity of 750 TEU, whilst maintaining a five ship configuration. Continuing with that number they have introduced a second larger ship named Star Ship, which arrived in Durban recently.
Midas Line links the Arabian Gulf, India, Indian Ocean Islands, South Africa and West Africa and in keeping with a policy of service improvement, the third of the larger breakbulk/ container ships should be in place at the beginning of April.
At the end of last year the service to Matadi was strengthened by the introduction of a dedicated Delmas shuttle feeder service connecting from Pointe Noire. West African port coverage was also augmented by adding Libreville to the schedule as a direct port of call.
