DREDGING OF the commercial harbour in the port of Walvis Bay will be completed by May 20, allowing a free flow of larger vessels well ahead of the scheduled completion date.
The entrance channel and berths one, two and three will all reach the new depth of 12,8m by that date, says Jerome Mouton, Namport's marketing manager.
We are awaiting the first of the regular fortnightly sailings of MACS vessels on May 28. At the moment Maersk vessels are the only regular callers here, but we are currently negotiating with two other lines who are interested in including Walvis Bay in their schedules.
Five other berths, from numbers 4 to 8, are being deepened to 10,6m. Once the dredging of the commercial harbour has been completed, the dredger will join its counterpart in the adjacent fishing harbour in an effort to speed up work in that sector. Contracted date for the completion of both harbours is end July, but the Holland-based HAM Dredging Company, which is undertaking the operation, is now satisfied that this will be completed by end-June.
