Dedicated minerals warehouse puts security first

Terminals specialising in specific commodities are fast becoming an international trend – one in which Beira Logistics Terminals (BLT) sees significant value. Instead of being the proverbial jack of all trades, specialist terminals provide peace of mind that cargo is being handled by experts. In the mining sector this was of extreme importance, said Jonathan Middleton, CEO Warehousing at JJ Africa. “It really does give assurance to cargo owners when the cargo is being handled by people who understand the commodity.” BLT recently opened a dedicated minerals warehouse that includes high-end security features. “The warehouse has extensive
CCTV coverage – especially over the weighing stations where individual weights are captured from the scale for reconciliation purposes later on,” said Middleton. “It has not only been purpose built to deal with high – value cargo, but also has the necessary security and management systems in place for safety.” He said these systems required minimum user input. “When you are dealing with high–value minerals there is
very little room for error,” said Middleton. BLT had opted for a management system, he said, that was updated in realtime. “Not only does this eliminate human error, but it also delivers vital information such as what minerals have been received at the terminal and if the weights are correct. This is a crucial service in the high– value minerals sector.”
