Dairy tap runs dry as gallons of milk are dumped

If you like your coffee white and you kickstart your day the right way, with a bowl of cereal, milk added of course, savour the taste because the dairy tap has been closed – so to speak.

In video footage seen this morning, several dairy tankers can be seen spilling milk by the gallon.

According to a source who sent the video to the Transit Assistance Group, as much as 300 000 litres of milk has been dumped because of the inability of trucks to deliver.

At least the tankers wasted their contents over what appears to be a field of pasture.

This morning Freight News did two checks to try to find milk, all in vain, finally asking a greengrocer whether there were alternative sources for milk other than what is trucked up from KwaZulu-Natal.

Producers in nearby agricultural areas such as Bapsfontein, said the owner of Fruit, Flower and Nut Market on Conrad Road in Randburg, could possibly, but it’s not safe – therein lies the rub.

“Yes, there’s milk there, but how do you get it here,” he said.

“I wish I could help, but you still need a truck to get it here and the trucks aren’t moving at the moment. And those that are prepared to move probably don’t have fuel.”

WATCH: Thousands of litres of milk had to be dumped yesterday by dairy tankers not able to deliver because of the anarchy in KwaZulu-Natal.
