CSAV looks into East London option

DESPITE THE large volumes of cargo moving to and from South Africa each week, CSAV (Compania SudAmericana de Vapores) is still looking at expanding its import and export business from this country.
That was the message from Ross Fothergill, trade manager for East Coast South America CSAV Tokyo, who was in South Africa last week to touch base with local agents and clients.
The bulk of the line's business involves motor vehicle parts from Japan to South Africa.
At present we are sending out about 200 20 foot containers per week from Japan and about 100 a week to South America on our weekly service, he said.
During his visit to South Africa, Fothergill visited both the Durban and East London ports.
We are looking at East London with a view to using it as an alternative to Durban, he said.
CSAV is a Chilean company which was established in 1872. It is the largest shipping company in South America and 20th largest in the world.
It operates shipping lines running on all the major routes. A new service which was recently introduced was from the Mediterranean to the United States East Coast. Combine Ocean, which is part of the Rennies Shipping Group, is CSAV's local agent. ends
