Transportation venture delivers on objectives ALAN PEAT RÖHLIG GRINDROD has been a pro-active developer in the field of broad-based BEE since the early 2000s,” says executive director Walter Grindrod. “We have taken a holistic view of empowerment from which we are now benefiting.” The scorecard approach has been developed for commerce and industry, and this creates a playing field where everyone knows the rules of engagement, Grindrod added. It measures across a broad spectrum , he told FTW, and his company is well positioned and well rated in the various categories that make up the codes of good practice. Having implemented good skills development and equity employment practice as its general labour practice it has continually been able to develop its people through the ranks. “These practices give good discipline that creates an equitable chance for people across the spectrum to develop their careers,” Grindrod added. Röhlig Grindrod has again been pro-active in the field of preferential procurement and enterprise development. It outsourced its transportation to Leschego, which was created to facilitate an owner-driver system of previous employees. They own and run the company, set the delivery scheduling , manage their vehicles and set the pricing “This created the opportunity for previous employees to manage themselves and their income,” Grindrod said. “This venture is now in its fifth year and has delivered all the objectives set out initially.”
In the field of enterprise development , Röhlig Grindrod partnered with Ithuba Capital to form Kapele freight and logistics services. “Kapele freight is an accredited clearing and forwarding agent that has a BB rating,” Grindrod said. “It was a greenfield development which, in just under two years, turned into a nice profitable business.”
