The demand for more manganese facilities at South African ports has seen the Port of Saldanha creating capacity to handle at least 2 million tons of the commodity every year. According to Robert van Rooyen, terminal manager for the Saldanha terminals, the demand for manganese currently far exceeds South Africa’s capacity. “The bulk terminal at Saldanha currently is the main iron ore export harbour in the country, with a highly mechanised ore handling plant having been set up there. There have, however, been increased calls to increase the capacity at the port to handle manganese as the demand has been increasing,” he said. The multipurpose terminal has therefore been capacitated to handle more manganese.
