Cosco plans to boost Port of Piraeus to 5m TEUs a year

The port of Piraeus

The international press has reported that China’s Cosco Shipping intends to boost the container volumes at the Greek port of Piraeus by 35% by 2018.

This would see the port being able to handle 5 million TEUs in 2018, and be part of Cosco’s plans to turn Greece into a transhipment hub for rapidly growing trade between Asia and Eastern Europe.

Cosco bought 51% of the port’s operating company last month for the equivalent of almost R4.4 billion.
