Corruption allegations again stall new Harare airport

Martin Rushmere
THE OPENING of Harare's scandal-plagued new airport has again been delayed, this time by the courts. The High Court has stopped the transfer of ownership from the builders to the government following an allegation of corruption involving a South African company over the award of an R8 million tender.
The tender was awarded to a consortium made up of a number of companies, including Xybase, an information technology company in South Africa. The losing bidder, Deutsche Aero Consult (Daco), a subsidiary of Frankfurt Airports, has claimed that the winners were awarded the contract after the deadline for bids had closed, and that the winners' price was double that quoted by Daco.
Justice Michael Gillespie ruled that handover of the airport should wait until the courts have decided on the validity of the award.
