REEFER SPECIALISTS Cool Carriers will start a weekly shipping service from Durban to ports in north Europe and the UK later this month to cater for exporters of deciduous citrus and subtropical fruits.
The Stockholm-based company, which operates the largest reefer service in the world, will offer sailings through to the UK cut-off date in mid-October for exports of this nature.
It will be the first committed regular reefer shipping service from Durban open to all exporters since the fruit industry deregulation. Previously Cool Carriers were contracted exclusively to Outspan operations from this country.
We'll have the first sailing as soon as crops have been picked, which comes traditionally after the Easter holiday break, says Trevor Vicary line co-ordinator at Rennies Ships Agency in Durban, who have been appointed service agents with responsibility for shipper liaison, cargo co-ordination and port operations.
Subject to support, Vicary says that 4 000 pallet vessels will be used in the 7 000 to 10 000 trt range from the fleet of more than 70 modern reefer vessels to which Cool Carriers have access.
Safmarine, as co-owner of Cool Carriers and partners of the Rennies group, will provide full support to the service.
