SOUTH AFRICAN component makers should continue to enjoy significant growth in exports, predicts National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers' executive director Clive Williams.
Writing in the Naacam annual report, Williams says the sector, which is expanding in the Eastern Cape, may also be in a position to start creating jobs.
South Africa's component exports have grown at over 40% a year since 1991, and completely built up unit (CBU) exports at just under 40%. To give a true picture of the currency balance, imports for 2000 are estimated to be just over
R22 billion, and the local content of the component and CBU exports are around three quarters and one third, respectively.
Thus net local content exports of R11 billion are about one half of imports.
