THE COEGA Development Corporation has begun monitoring seismic activity along the Coega Fault, as part of the long-term assessment of the risks associated with this geological structure, according to the PE Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
A joint venture partnership between SRK Consulting and ISS International has been awarded the monitoring contract.
The Coega Fault, which runs through part of the Coega Industrial Development Zone, has been considered throughout the technical planning which has been undertaken to date.Technical specialists believe that the fault is unlikely to impact negatively on the Coega IDZ. Despite this, says Coega Development Corporation technical and planning manager Eugene Heeger, the CDC has commissioned the seismic monitoring studies in view of the strategic importance of the IDZ and the sensitivity of certain installations.
This monitoring will involve the installation of electronic sensors in a borehole alongside the fault which will keep a continuous watch for any seismic activity. Data will be analysed at frequent intervals and an assessment of seismic risk made at the end of the one year contract period.
