THE BUILDING of the port of Ngqura, which is integrated into the Coega project and will also serve the rest of southern Africa, is progressing according to schedule.
“With the quay walls complete, the successful filling of the harbour basin in July 2004, the dredging finished and the steady progress of the breakwaters, our main focus at the moment is the positioning of the caissons,” says Chris Matchett, National Ports Authority (NPA) resident engineer.
The five caisson units are colossal concrete structures that will be positioned offshore to form the ends of the breakwaters.
Four caissons are to be floated out to the end of the western breakwater by late January or early February, forming the end of this breakwater.
