China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) announced late yesterday that it plans to acquire up to 11 mega ships of 21 000 TEUs.
This announcement, made via a Shanghai Stock Exchange filing, came hours after the company reported a US$165.2 million loss to its shareholders, according to media reports.
In the filing, CSCL noted that it plans to acquire the mega-ships under a bareboat charter via a wholly-owned subsidiary. The board has approved the transaction.
The plan is to bareboat charter six of the mega-sized ships with options for five more similar vessels, CSCL said the deal would allow the company to “uphold its low carbon emission operations, follow the market trend of operating larger containerships, further optimise its fleet structure, and raise competitiveness.”
