Changing roles of EC ports

A near-empty container yard
in the port of Port Elizabeth
is an indication that container
traffic has moved to Ngqura.
In the place of container
vessels on any one day there
will be three bulk carriers
taking on manganese, with
still regular calls by car
carriers.
Transnet Port Terminals
(TPT) has converted two
quaysides to handle highvalue
manganese ore – which
is mostly brought in by road
from the Northern Cape.
The existing ore terminal
is fed by rail and concentrates
on the lower-value ore.
Export ore volumes
through the container
terminal have increased by
an average of 22.5% yearon-
year which is providing
it with a valuable revenue
stream, according to a port
spokesman.
