CHANGES ARE being
implemented to South
Africa’s customs systems
to speed up trade, Finance
Minister Trevor Manuel said
in his annual budget to
parliament last week.
“The face of customs
administration is also
changing world wide.
Increasing international trade
requires more visible and
effective customs capability
to improve trade facilitation,
risk assessment, and border
enforcement.
“Amendments to the
Customs and Excise Act will
be introduced to strengthen
customs enforcement and
the implementation of the
revised Kyoto Convention.
“Sars has also stepped up
its training efforts to develop
skilled customs professionals
who will be deployed in the
new Customs Border Control
Unit.”
