Danish container line Maersk has a new chairman, Robert Mærsk Uggla, great-great-grandson of Peter Mærsk Møller, who founded the company 118 years ago.
He will take over as head of the world’s second-biggest box ship enterprise on March 15 at the company’s annual general meeting.
Second in charge under Uggla will be Marc Engel, Maersk’s new vice-chair, who has served on the carrier’s board of directors since 2019.
In addition to his current role as director, Engel also served as chief supply chain officer for British consumer goods multinational Unilever, a seat he will vacate to fill his new role.
Maersk’s outgoing chair, Jim Hagemann Snabe, will remain in an advisory position to Uggla.
Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, great-granddaughter of the line’s founder, will hand over the reins of vice-chair, a position she has occupied since 2003.
She had been a board member for over three decades, having served on the line’s executive since 1991.
Apart from his royal shipping roots, the new chair of Maersk has a seven-year stint behind him on the company’s board, during which time he garnered much praise for his restructuring and renewal of the line.
