Cattle-powered ships for the US Navy

With ‘alternative biofuels’ for ships being a topic of extensive research amongst commercial ocean carriers, the US Navy has joined the fray and is placing part of its bets on fuel from cattle.

Strange as it may sound, cattle fat is just one of the many viable alternative sources for fuel.

According to a Navy spokesman quoted by Fox News, it’s part of its plans to reduce the fleet’s dependence on foreign oil – with half of its energy due to come from alternative sources by 2020.

The initiative, meantime, runs under the title of the ‘Great Green Fleet’. According to the US Navy website, the centrepiece is a carrier strike group (CSG) that deploys alternative fuels, including nuclear power for the carrier and a blend of advanced biofuel made from beef fat and traditional petroleum for its escort ships.
