CARGO CONNECTION opened its Cape Town office on September 2 with full GSA services available on all three airlines it represents. Although all three fly out of Johannesburg, bookings from Cape Town through to final destination can be completed at the Cape Town office. "Besides selling the freight service on these airlines, we now have a full trucking facility available to point of destination both in Africa and in Europe," says director Gerd von Mansberg. "You hand in your waybill in Cape Town and everything is done for you, right up to the client's doorstep." Arne von Mansberg, youngest member of the family, is resident director in Cape Town, with elder brother Dieter heading up the Brussels office, where he reports full holds southbound on Hydro Air's twice-a-week flights. The single unhappy note in the operation is the decision by Egypt Air to reduced its flights between Cairo and Johannesburg from three a week to two. The Thursday flight has been cancelled, leaving Tuesday and Saturday frequencies. "We use up every centimetre of space we get on the Boeing 777s they fly," says Von Mansberg senior. "It's mainly flowers for the Far East on the northbound trip, where we get around 15 tons capacity. But it is a story of full at all times." Third airline in the Cargo Connection stable is the Algerian based Khalifa Air which flies once a week.
