Construction of planned upgrades to the Cape Town International airport runways and associated infrastructure could start by mid-2018 – if all approvals are received, said Deon Cloete, general manager of Cape Town International Airport (CTIA).
This after the airport received the green light from the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), following an Environmental Impact Assessment, for its upgrade plans.
Cloete said the DEA authorisation was one of several approval process hurdles that needed to be cleared, but he was confident that this would only be a matter of time.
“This runway project is not only about the growth of the airport, it’s about unlocking the growth potential of Cape Town and the Western Cape,” he said.
