Transnet Freight Rail has announced that the annual, large-scale maintenance shutdown of the Cape channel’s East London and Bloemfontein areas will begin on Sunday (August 7) at 06:00, with all work to be completed by Saturday, August 13 at 23:59.
During this period, specialised infrastructure maintenance and upgrade projects will be conducted over the Bloemfontein – Noupoort and Springfontein - East London railway line sections, a distance of approximately 616km.
The annual shutdown caters for essential maintenance activities that cannot take place during normal occupational conditions - and its objective is to improve the reliability of infrastructure.
The total planned cost for the shutdown amounts to approximately R 41 millionand includes the installation work to be done by contractors, material and labour cost.
