“STRICTLY SPEAKING we’re not required to have International Safety Management Code certificates (ISM) for our bunker barges, as they don’t go out on international voyages,” Phil Harris, FFS Bunkers’ general manager told FTW this week. Nevertheless FFS decided five years ago to introduce the practice and discipline to the company fleet as a means of raising standards. The ISM Code was created by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in 1993 and is mandatory in terms of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), although it generally applies to ships sailing internationally. ISM is designed to ensure safety at sea and to avoid damage or pollution.
