THE EGYPTIAN Ministry of Defence is equipping its forces with bullet-proof jackets manufactured in South Africa, and filling the holds of Egypt Air Airbus 340/200s flying on its three-times-a-week schedule to Cairo.
"It's the biggest consignment of its kind we have handled, totalling 8 000 jackets in all," says Eugene Duvenage of The Cargo Connection, South African general sales agents for the airline.
The first batch was dispatched during October with 1006 packages weighing a total of 35 545kg moved on five separate flights. The heavy cargo was carried with loads of almost four tons per pallet. The second batch was to be shipped out on three more flights this month. This comprised 660 pieces, weighing in total slightly more than 24 000 kg.
When completed a total of 60 tons will have been airlifted - the highest quantity of security apparel exported on order from South Africa to Egypt.
