WHEN THE Container Terminal 111 was opened to shipping in Bremerhaven (Germany) last month, it marked the start of a major project in the port aimed at making Bremen ports among the leaders in north-west Europe.

The first of two new berths, was opened last month and is part of the terminal expansion. The new berth is 350 metres long, and has three new gantry cranes able to serve vessels more than 40 metres wide stacking as high as six containers on deck.

The second berth on the new quay is expected to be commissioned towards the end of the year. This will then provide almost three kilometres of quay length for ocean-going vessels as well as a modern terminal with the largest self-contained facility in Europe which has now been extended by 50% to offer 2,4 million square metres of marshalling area.
