Botswana sets its sights on renewable energy exports

Botswana aims to become a net exporter of power by 2018, according to the country’s Minister of Energy, Minerals and Water Resources, Kitso Mokaila.

The country is embarking on ambitious projects that aim to exploit the abundance of solar and gas energy potential within Botswana.

Online newspaper The Southern Times cited Business Botswana council Member, Martin Chibanda, as saying that renewable energy had the potential to solve the energy crisis current sweeping the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The newspaper further quoted South Africa’s Minister of Energy, Tina Joemat-Petterson, as saying: “Many developing countries are struggling to meet fast-growing energy demand and at the same time, the technology cost of renewable energy has been steadily falling over the past decade.”
