Burkina Faso's borders were still closed and a strict curfew was still in place on Friday following a military coup d’etat during a cabinet meeting last Wednesday.
The presidential guard unit, after arresting president Michel Kafando and his cabinet, declared that it had taken over power in the country, stripped the president of his functions, and dissolved both the transitional government and the National Transition Council.
Thought to be loyal to long-time Burkina Faso leader, Blaise Compaore, the presidential guard said they would hold "wide-ranging talks" to form a government that would organise "inclusive and peaceful elections".
