Blowing the trumpet for Coega

ED RICHARDSON PUBLIC ENTERPRISES minister Alec Erwin is upbeat about prospects for the Coega Industrial Development Zone outside Port Elizabeth. Speaking at the celebrations for the filling of the port of Ngqura basin recently, Erwin said the Coega IDZ was one of a handful of sites in the world which offered a combination of a deep-water hub port, thousands of hectares of unrestricted back of port land and a “fine city”. “Our competitors are all in the desert. All they consist of is a port and a gas-fired power station.” Coega, he said, was one of a few IDZs around the world where investors did not have “to import everything” for the construction of their factories.
